Anna McMichael and Helen Svoboda - The Weddel Seal

Nature and climate have always been central to Anne McMichael’s work. While her previous releases took the escalating climate crisis as their starting point, this time she turned to the underwater sounds of the Weddell seal. On “The Weddell Sea,” she and Helen Svoboda respond to these sounds in a refined, poetic way. Using their instruments and voices to imitate them, the duo brings listeners closer to the animal. “Foghorn,” the album’s opening track, offers a lovely introduction to this delicate portrait of a sea creature—framed in a contemporary classical style and sure to capture the imagination.
