PYUR - Epoch Sinus
Hotflush Records had been ignored for some time as all the fun of musical discovery was on a lukewarm fire. Until a secret tipster urged to give PYUR a listen. And listen, and listen, and listen… like a new addiction; during sleepless nights, early morning flights and when thoughts were filled with longing. ‘Epoch Sinus’ grew within a week into a translation of inner worries in all their forms. An inner chord tingled and the vibration hardly stopped. PYUR is Munich-born sound artist Sophie Schnell. Music shaped her personality. And she couldn’t think of a more beautiful way to say thank you than the subdued and emotional ‘Epoch Sinus’. Everything that music has taught her and made her experience is wrapped up in this wondrous debut. ‘Epoch Sinus’ is a collage of found sounds. Cut and pasted into moments of cacophonous brutality and introspective softness. Opposites that on ‘Epoch Sinus’ delicately go hand in hand like eternally competing twin sisters, tearing each other apart and gazing at each other with tenderness. It is a sonic exploration along bumpy roads, past colourful landscapes and buried in a dreamy naivety. It misleads. Because deep down ‘Epoch Sinus’ is raw and crushing. Sounds swell and unravel like a wildly swinging wind chime, its wires snapping, grains of sand scratching the skin and a brutal storm threatening to move in. Like a Ben Frost without the bombast, a Nicolas Jaar on the wintry European mainland, where the never reached mountain peaks bring the hope that ‘Epoch Sinus’ will show when the tears have dried. A rarely heard emotionality contained in seven lush carpets of sound.
